The stock record the Zoo Licensing Act asks for, kept current for the whole collection.
A public aquarium is a zoo in law, so ZooLog gives you the same thing it gives any zoo: keepers log every animal on the mobile app, offline on the gallery floor, and the admin portal keeps your inspection-ready stock record (sex, date of hatch or birth, origin, IUCN status and hazard category on every animal) alongside the daily welfare log, exportable the moment an inspector asks.
The keeper apps are in an invite-only beta. Early-access spots open now.
- Sex, date of hatch or birth, and origin
- IUCN conservation status & hazard category
- Acquisitions, births, deaths, disposals and escapes
- The full welfare and treatment log, per animal
- Export it anytime: a watermarked spreadsheet or data file, stamped as yours
A public aquarium is a zoo under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981.
If you exhibit aquatic wild animals to the public seven or more days a year, your aquarium is a licensed zoo, inspected by your local authority. Section 1A(f) of the Act requires an up-to-date collection record; SSSMZP 2012 §12 (Stock Records) details it, and the new Standards of Modern Zoo Practice for GB apply from 24 May 2027. ZooLog is the same zoo-style daily welfare logging and stock record, kept inspection-ready. It is not a water-quality or life-support monitoring system, and none of this is legal advice: it is the collection record and husbandry trail the Act asks for.
Good to know: ZooLog is the same product a zoo runs, no aquarium-specific tooling: it keeps the collection and welfare records the Act asks for. Keep your water-quality and life-support systems; ZooLog is the record layer around them, built for inspection.
Answers for aquariums.
Is a public aquarium really a zoo in law?
Yes. The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 defines a zoo as any collection where wild animals are exhibited to the public seven or more days a year, aquariums included. You are licensed and inspected the same way.
Can I record a group rather than every individual?
Yes. Where individuals are not identified separately, one record can stand for the group; where they are, you record per animal. The daily welfare log attaches either way.
Does it replace our water-quality system?
No. ZooLog is the collection and husbandry record layer for inspection. Keep your life-support and water-chemistry tools; ZooLog keeps the stock record and welfare log the Act requires.
Is it available yet?
The admin portal is live; the keeper apps are in an invite-only beta, not yet in the app stores. Join early access and we will set your aquarium up.
Does it really work offline?
Yes. Keepers log at the animal with no signal; everything syncs automatically when a connection returns. Nothing is lost.
